A man prepares to perform the last rites at his wife's funeral in Varanasi. It is believed, anyone cremated on the holy land of Varanasi is freed from the cycle of rebirth.
So these people didn't want their loved ones to be reborn into another life form to repeat the process and hope that they see one another again in the next life? I'm just trying to understand the pyres and the touching ritual.
Salvation is highly revered in Hindusium. I'm sure people would rather set their loved ones free from the cycle of rebirth than wish to see them in their next one.
Thanks. The shaving of the head hair is part of the ritual followed by the male members of the immediate family.. thereby including the husband, sons, grandsons..
I looked out of my balcony, watching pyres after pyres, from sunrise to sunset, death suddenly didn’t seem as morbid. After all, it is a reality in Benares, a way of life. A snippet from my blog from my trip to Varanasi
Initially, I was really lost but after 4 days of being on the ghats and watching people sitting by the tea stall with the barbers and street dwellers, conversations are likely. This picture was a result of the conversation I had with the man, so I did not have to approach him to ask for one.
Would it be the shaving of all the head-hair, that is part of the ritual, or is it rather a general physical care in the sense of cleansing?
